Chicken Cordon Bleu Roll-Ups are a delightful twist on the classic French dish, Chicken Cordon Bleu, which originated in Switzerland as a schnitzel filled with ham and cheese. These roll-ups simplify the traditional recipe without sacrificing the elegant flavors that make it so beloved. Perfect for a weeknight yet fancy enough for guests, this dish is a harmonious blend of tender chicken, creamy cheese, and salty ham, all wrapped in a golden breadcrumb crust.
These Chicken Cordon Bleu Roll-Ups pair beautifully with a light, lemony arugula salad or some steamed green beans. For a more indulgent meal, serve them alongside creamy mashed potatoes or a rich gratin. A crisp white wine, such as a Chardonnay or a Sauvignon Blanc, complements the creamy inner texture and crispy outer coating perfectly, making it a sophisticated meal for any occasion.
Chicken Cordon Bleu Roll-Ups
Servings: 4
Ingredients
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
4 slices of ham (thinly sliced)
4 slices of Swiss cheese
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups breadcrumbs
Salt and pepper to taste
Oil for frying
Directions
1. Flatten the chicken breasts to about 1/4 inch thickness using a meat mallet or rolling pin.
2. Season each chicken breast with salt and pepper.
3. Place a slice of ham and a slice of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast, then roll them up tightly.
4. Secure the roll-ups with toothpicks to ensure they maintain their shape during cooking.
5. Set up three shallow dishes for dredging: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs.
6. Dredge each roll-up first in flour, then dip in the beaten eggs, and finally coat evenly with breadcrumbs.
7. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Once hot, fry the roll-ups, turning occasionally, until golden brown and the chicken is cooked through, about 8 to 10 minutes.
8. Remove the toothpicks, slice if desired, and serve immediately.
