Secret talks with UNESCO?
Rumor has it that Buuren is even in talks with UNESCO to have the planned center recognized as a model project for “sports and sustainable development.” If successful, this would bring the city international attention—an unprecedented step for a municipality with just under 40,000 residents.
People celebrate – spontaneous parade planned
Shortly after the announcement, hundreds of people gathered in front of City Hall. Students, sports clubs, and music groups announced a spontaneous parade through the city center. Children carried tennis rackets and signs reading: “Thank you Steffi!”
A historic day for Buuren.
This appointment not only marks a special moment in the history of the city of Buuren, but also demonstrates how great personalities can bring new impetus to smaller towns. Steffi Graf – once at home on the world’s great courts – will now become the face of a city that is reinventing itself: sporty, modern, and full of vision.
